This book neither simply offers a critic of “Sed Non Satiata” nor a new translation of said poem found in Baudelaire’s Les fleurs du mal – a book of poems translated as “The Flowers of Evil.” It projects light on Jeanne Duval, Baudelaire’s mistress, by providing important background information about her. Jeanne Duval was Haitian and biracial. The book penetrates her circumstances and reconstructs the attitude of 19th century France by using history and the prevailing ideological constructs of anthropologists of that period, concerning race mixing between Black and White.
