Concerned Africans are mobilizing to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. This is a voluntary association of people from civil society, that will mobilize assistance for the most vulnerable African-American victims of Hurricane Katrina, generate awareness about the overall plight of the community and provide spiritual support and solidarity.

Their immediate objectives are to have a resource mobilisation campaign and a fact-finding solidarity mission to New Orleans.

Preamble

Considering the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina on the American people ; Recognising that the United States of America has been involved with humanitarian assistance to Africa during disasters on this continent ; Considering that the majority of people affected by this disaster are of limited resources ; Recognising that there were difficulties in assisting this victims in a timely and effective manner ; Recognising that these victims are part of the African Diaspora ; Considering the legacy of the torn history of the African continent and its Diaspora ; Understanding the need to work directly with organisations of the affected ; And considering the fundamental principles of African societies and traditions based on humanity, caring and wisdom ;

As Africans, we believe it is a continental duty to bring help and hope where there is destruction and destitution.

Therefore

Pan-African Ujimaa was created in Johannesburg on 09 September 2005 to serve as a forum to mobilize the people of Africa when their voice and support are needed.

Pan-African Ujimaa aims at : • Mobilising African conscience for people affected by Hurricane Katrina • Mobilising help from Africa for the people most affected by Hurricane Katrina • Bringing an African message of solidarity and hope to people affected by Hurricane Katrina • Continuing these efforts to bring help and hope as and when appropriate within the Global Africa

This will be achieved through : • An immediate mobilization of South African society specifically and Africa generally to raise funds ; • Conveying an African Declaration of Solidarity to the affected ; • Sending a Mission of Solidarity to visit the affected peoples ; and • Sensitisation of all sectors of public and private life in Africa to stand together with people affected by natural and man-made disasters.
